Devlog 5 - Alpha Release


Game Alpha

The alpha release of the game is now available to download! Since our last update, we've added a couple more changes. While we will list out these changes, feel free to download the game alpha links at the bottom of the devlog to try the build out for yourself!


We have imported more custom 3D models into the scene, a player model, and varying environmental assets to create the factory feel. Based on the feedback from the last iteration of our scene, we realized that the environment needs to be darker. We removed the windows from the arena to see less of the skybox. We also adjusted the skybox material to make it significantly darker, on top of reducing the intensity of the directional light.


There is now a working penalty system for when the players move off beat! There is a projectile shooter at the top of the boss that will fire a bullet towards the tile where the player pressed the off beat input. 


We have a working health point system with simple HP bars as placeholders to visually represent that value. When the sniper bullet hits the player, the player loses health. When the player walks to the inner most ring to reach the boss and hits the boss, the boss loses health. 


For now, there is a start and pause menu. They both have an options menu that allows the players to customize their sound settings. This was an important feature to add early on since it is a rhythm game. Having the option to customize how the different sounds blends allows players to adjust accordingly to suit their own needs and preferences. 


We also have an improved background song and sound effects for when the player moves and when the player hits the boss.


These are all the changes that we have so far. Some new features that we are actively working on include a working state machine with different boss attacks, improved menu designs,  a sketchy shader that makes our game look like a pen drawing, cutscenes, and a completed game loop with victory and end screens.
